Despite the overwhelmingly positive benefits of exercise on longevity, few Americans hit the target of 30 minutes five times a week. Natural substances that mimic exercise could be a boon to enhancing longevity, particularly for sedentary Americans. In this presentation, Dr. Cheryl Burdette, ND will review the biochemistry of exercise and pathways such as PGC-1 alpha, AMPK, Sirtuins, and increases in NAD+ that are influenced by exercise. She will then examine natural compounds such as berberine, resveratrol, quercetin, and niacin and their place as exercise-mimetics or -augmentation. She will also compare niacin and niacin derivatives for their efficacy in increasing NAD+ and evaluate data that utilize natural exercise mimetics.
